This was recommended to us by five friends with completely different tastes in books. This is a powerful tale/parable of one man's struggle to make sense out of his daughter's tragic kidnapping and murder. The bulk of the book involves conversations with God (as the Trinity) at the shack where the murder occurred. Highly recommended!
Gary L. Thomas: Sacred Marriage
Useful resource for pre-marital counseling (or for that matter, marital counseling). Its simple, anecdotal style seems more like a seminar presentation rather than a marriage manual.
Jim Henderson: Jim and Casper Go to Church: Frank Conversation about Faith, Churches, and Well-Meaning Christians
A Christian and an Atheist visit several churches together and reflect on what they experienced. Eye-opening, to say the least!
P.D. James: The Children of Men
What would happen if the entire human race suddenly became infertile? What effect would this have on humanity, knowing that there would be no heritage to pass on to future generations? Would what we do matter?
Ken Sande: The Peacemaker: A Biblical Guide to Resolving Personal Conflict
An excellent resource for individuals and churches that very clearly explains typical responses to conflict (fight or flight) as well as offering Biblical models of true peacemaking. Highly recommended!!
Steve Berry: The Romanov Prophecy: a Novel
What if Alexei and Anastasia had survived? Steve Berry's tale is steeped with actual events, but is purely a fictional thriller.
Joel Marcus: Jesus and the Holocaust: Reflections on Suffering and Hope
Can there be any meaning in suffering and tragedy? Does the holocaust prove there is no God? How can Jesus' death and resurrection give us hope in our own times of suffering? These and other questions are addressed in this series of Lenten reflections.

Cooling Off with Warm Fellowship in Hillsdale

With the temperature and humidity skyrocketing and the heat index well above 100, we were happy to spend Wednesday evening at the Hillsdale Free Methodist Church -- not because of the cool temperatures inside, but rather because of the warm fellowship.

We first enjoyed a meal with members of the Hillsdale mission committee and then shared our Tree of Life presentation with the Wednesday night prayer meeting group at the church. Hillsdale has been one of our long-term partner churches, supporting both our Missionary Support Account and the Hungary Country Support Account. We appreciate their faithfulness.

It was nice to learn of their upcoming ministry in Guatemala. Pastor Keith Porter and a team of about 15 members will be ministering there from July 26 to August 4. We pray that they will be blessed and that they will be a blessing to others.

French film based on the true story of a group of Trappist monks living and ministering among poor villagers in rural Algeria during the time of the Algerian Civil War. The film focuses on the monks' philosophical and moral dilemma of abandoning the people with whom they minister (and flee to safety) or to stay (and face almost certain death).

An art film based on Pieter Bruegel the Elder's painting, "The Way to Calvary." This is a stunning living reproduction of the canvas and the stories that are told in it. Very little dialogue.
